A Hood River, OR area man died Monday evening after he fell approximately 15 feet over a waterfall located on a tributary of Rock Creek, north of Stevenson, WA. Robert Kahler, 55, was hiking cross country with his son Marcus, 31, of Hood River, after their vehicle broke down. While crossing a tributary of Rock Creek, Mr. Kahler slipped into the water and was swept over the falls, landing on the rocks below.
Marcus was able to make his way out of the very difficult terrain Tuesday morning when the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office was notified of the incident. Marcus was not familiar with the area and a search effort was organized. Late Tuesday evening, members from Wind River Search and Rescue located Mr. Kahler at the base of the waterfall deceased. Because of the lateness of the day, and the extremely hazardous terrain, recovery efforts were resumed Wednesday morning. Through the efforts of members from Wind River Search and Rescue, Clark County Search and Rescue, Klickitat County Search and Rescue, and the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office, Mr Kahler was recovered at approximately 3:00 PM yesterday afternoon after a 6 hour effort utilizing high angle rope work.
“We are very grateful for the efforts of our volunteer Search and Rescue personnel”, said Undersheriff Dave Cox. “These folks worked extremely hard to recover Mr. Kahler, which will now allow the family to have some closure to this horrific accident.”
