Honoring Dedicated Service in Skamania County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team 

Retired Patrol Sergeant Arne Gonser Steps Down After 40 Years; Five Veteran Members Also Retire

Skamania County, WA — January 8, 2026 — The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office proudly announces the retirement of Arne Gonser (Sgt. Retired) from his role as leader of the agency’s esteemed Dive Team. After four decades of unwavering service as a Public Safety Rescue and Recovery Diver, Gonser is stepping down, leaving behind a legacy defined by dedication, leadership, and countless lives impacted. Gonser remarked “It has been my privilege to have served the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office, numerous law enforcement agencies in both Washington and Oregon, The U.S.G.S.  Diving and Research community, and citizens throughout the Columbia River Gorge.   This marks my 40th year working as a Public Safety Rescue/Recovery Diver but it’s time to let a new generation take the helm.” 

In addition to Sergeant Gonser’s retirement, the Sheriff’s Office wishes to recognize the extraordinary service of five other Dive Team members who are also stepping down. Each of these individuals has served for more than 20 years, bringing specialized skills, courage, and compassion to every mission. Their combined experience and dedication have been vital to the success and reputation of the Skamania County Dive Team.

  • Carl Johanson, Dive Team Member — Over 20 years of service 
  • Mark Weiland, Dive Team Member — Over 20 years of service 
  • Jim Larson, Dive Team Member — Over 20 years of service 
  • Dennis Crow, Dive Team Member — Over 20 years of service 

The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office extends its deepest gratitude to Sergeant Gonser and these veteran team members for their decades of selfless service. Their contributions have ensured safer waters and provided closure and comfort to countless families in times of crisis.
