Search Continues For Berry Picker Near Mt. Adams

August 1, 2015

The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office is continuing search operations off Forest road 24 in the Sawtooth Berry fields near Troutlake, WA.

The Sheriff’s dispatch center received a call at approximately 3:00pm on July 30, 2015 from 57 year old Lisa Fujiwara out of Bend Oregon.  Fujiwara reported her 87 year old mother, Wasco Fujiwara from The Dalles OR, was missing after the two were picking huckleberries in the Sawtooth Berry fields.

Lisa stated she last saw her mother at approximately 1:30pm near the 24 road summit at surprise lakes.  Lisa separated from her mother for a short time and when she returned to the area her mother had been picking, she discovered she was missing.

Approximately 14 searchers and 2 dog teams along with a fixed wing aircraft and helicopter searched the area throughout the day on Friday with no sign of Fujiwara.

Search operations were suspended Friday night due to difficulty in obtaining SAR resources.

Volunteer searchers from across the region are participating in today’s effort.  There are over 60 ground searchers on site as well as quads and dog teams.  There are no aircraft supporting search operations today.

Wasco Fujiwara suffers from early stage dementia.

Search efforts are currently set to continue through today and tomorrow if Fujiwara is not located.

Family and friends are assisting in the efforts today and there are a large number of forest users and berry pickers in the area as well. The Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone who may have information in this case to contact them at (509) 427-9490.
