On April 5, 2016 at approximately 3:18 pm, the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a one-car, serious injury collision on the Washougal River Road near Malfait Tracks. Sheriff’s Deputies, Skamania County EMS/Rescue, and Skamania County Fire District #4 all responded.
On arrival first responders located a 1991 Chevrolet Pickup had struck a tree, head-on. The driver, identified as John V. Johnson, 66, of Washougal, died at the scene. His passenger, Leland Bedell, 65, also of Washougal, was taken by ambulance to the hospital with serious injuries.
According to witnesses, Johnson pulled to the side of the road to let traffic pass. He then re-entered the roadway accelerated, passed two other vehicles, left the roadway, and struck the tree.
“It appears Mr. Johnson may have experienced a medical emergency, which caused the erratic driving leading to the collision. We will be awaiting the results of the autopsy to confirm the information gathered at the scene,” said Undersheriff Pat Bond.
