On April 17, 2016 at approximately 10:43 am, the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call requesting assistance for a rock climber that had fallen approximately 50 feet and is not responsive. The location given was the Ozone climbing route near milepost 24 on State Route 14, just east of Washougal.

Deputies, along with Skamania County EMS, Fire District #4, Fire District #5, Camas Ambulance, and a high angle rescue team out of Clark County responded.

The climber, Veda Carmony, 54, from Portland, Oregon, was extricated from the climb using a rope system. She was then air lifted by Life Flight to a metro area hospital for treatment for head and lower extremity injuries. The fall was witnessed and quickly reported by another climber.

“The continued cooperation between responding agencies is critical in these types of technical rescues. The quick response, ability, and professionalism were paramount to the successful outcome of this incident,” said Undersheriff Pat Bond.
