Climber Falls At The Ozone Wall

Thursday, 12 May, 2016

On 5/11/16 at approximately 3:20pm, the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting an injured climber at the Ozone Climbing Route, near milepost 24 on State Route 14. The caller reported his friend had fallen 20 to 25 feet and injured his leg.

Deputies and Skamania County EMS were dispatched to the scene, along with members of Skamania County Fire District #4 and #5. EMS personnel were able to access the climber, Jarod West, 29, of Beaverton, Oregon. They were able to stabilize him and through the use of a raising system were able to bring him to the roadway. He was then transported by ambulance to Peace Health SW for treatment.

Information gathered at the scene and from his hiking group was they had found the route through the use of a climbing guide. When they arrived and began the climb, it was determined they were on the wrong route. It suddenly became more technical than the group anticipated.

“This is the second climbing incident in a short period of time in the same location. While we understand this type of activity is inherently dangerous,  climbers should be prepared, cautious, and familiar with the routes,” said Undersheriff  Pat Bond.
