Wild Fire Investigated As Arson

June 10, 2016

The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with investigators from the Washington State Department of Natural Resources, is investigating a fire that is believed to have been intentionally set.

Fire crews and law enforcement responded to a logging site Thursday morning after logging crews reported a wildfire at the location above Mill-A east of Stevenson Washington.  The fire was approximately 2 acres in size and burning in slash piles and log decks.  3 pieces of logging equipment at the site were destroyed as a result of the fire.  Investigators believe the log processor and two loaders were intentionally set on fire and those fires spread to the acreage surrounding the site.

The timberland is owned by Broughton Lumber Company in Bingen WA.  Arnold Logging was contracted to conduct the harvest of timber at the site of fire.

Fire crews from the Washington State DNR, U.S. Forest Service, Mill-A fire department and SDS lumber worked throughout the day on Thursday to contain the fire.  A helicopter was ordered in to the site and also worked to contain the fire.   As of late Thursday afternoon the fire was contained.  DNR fire crews remain on scene today to maintain containment and mop-up.

Costs associated with the fire may exceed over a million dollars in loss including the logging equipment.

No personnel were injured in the fire suppression efforts.

Investigation is continuing.
