On 6/30/19 at approximately 4:07 PM, the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office responded to a welfare check within the city limits of Stevenson, Washington. A business owner called to report a 14-year-old female had come into the business stating she was waiting for a ride and then stated she was from Aberdeen, Washington and “was on the run.”
Deputy’s responded and contacted her, verifying she was listed as a missing/endangered juvenile out of Hoquiam, Washington. They verified her age as a 12- year- old. During the interview it was revealed she’d been picked up at the YWCA in Hoquiam, thinking the adult male she’d met through friends on social media was going to take her home. He instead drove her to the Stevenson area, but not before committing a burglary and sexually assaulting her near McCleary, Washington, according to the victim.
She was taken to a local area hospital for treatment and eventually released to her family. Sgt Ryan Taylor and Deputy Summer Scheyer worked with Sgt Jeremy Mitchell of the Hoquiam Police Department to identity the residence burglarized, which was also the scene of one of the alleged assaults. They were also able to identify the suspect as Jeremiah D. Shallow, 21, of Tacoma, Washington. Our office notified local agencies in hopes of locating Shallow as it was relayed he was still in our area visiting friends.
On 7/3/19 a Carson, Washington resident reported her 16-year-old grand-daughter as a runaway. A Deputy was dispatched and learned the 16-year-old had contacted a subject on social media and he had stopped by to visit her on Sunday, 6/30/19. She was last seen on the early morning hours on 7/1/19 and the subject in this case was identified as Jeremiah Shallow.
A statewide law enforcement notification was relayed in an attempt to locate Shallow and our runaway. She had been in contact via social media with her family in Skamania County and we were attempting to track her movements. On the evening of 7/3/19 a family member called Deputy Chris Helton to advise her grand-daughter was currently at a library in Graham, Washington and learned Shallow was back enroute to pick her up. Sgt Ryan Taylor was able to call the librarian and positively identify our runaway. They were directed to call 911 and members of the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office responded. They were able to locate our runaway and take Shallow into custody on a multiple count felony warrant associated with previous incident.
Sgt Ryan Taylor, Deputy Summer Scheyer, and Deputy Chris Helton worked tirelessly on both cases, coordinating with numerous agencies to bring a successful conclusion to both incidents and reunite both girls with their families. Jeremiah Shallow will also face a charge of kidnapping and custodial interference in Skamania County as well as litany of crimes in Grays Harbor County.
