On Saturday, October 12, 2019, at approximately 2:43 pm The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office received a report that a hiker had become lost, while picking mushrooms, near 572 Beacon Highlands Road in Skamania, Wa. The reporting party, Sue Cosper, told dispatchers her friend, Jung C. VanAtta, 74, Vancouver was overdue.

The information received was VanAtta and Donald E. Bergseng, 87, of Vancouver were picking mushrooms on some property located at 572 Beacon Highlands Road, 15 miles NW of Stevenson, WA. They returned to their car at approximately 1000 am, at which point VanAtta decided to go back out and pick more, planning to return within the hour, which she did not. She had never picked in the area and was not familiar with the property. Friends and family searched the area, alerting our office later in the afternoon.

A Search & Rescue Coordinator was notified, and a SAR was initiated, searching until 2:45 am with negative results. The search continued Sunday with several ground teams, dog teams, 3 Ariel drones, and a contracted helicopter from JL Aviation. A reverse 911 alert was also initiated to alert home owners in the area. VanAtta has yet to be located, however the search will resume this morning,  10/14/19.
