On Saturday, October 19, 2019, at approximately 4:17 pm The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office received a report that an overdue/missing mushroom picker on the USFS 60 Road, 10 miles north of Carson, WA.

The mushroom picker, Richard L. Sugai, 78, Beaverton, OR, was reported overdue/missing by his family after a day trip to pick mushrooms. Sugai was in the area with several family members, an area in which they’ve picked for decades.

A Search & Rescue Deputy was dispatched to the area and contacted the family. The initial information obtained was Sugai was last seen entering the woods earlier in the day. When he didn’t return, the family began to search for him. They alerted our office when it began to get dark. We were advised Sugai did have a medical condition that requires medication daily. Sugai was dressed for the torrential rain, however he was wearing dark clothing.

A search was immediately initiated, and teams began scouring the area throughout the night with negative results. The adjoining camps of pickers and hunting camps were also alerted, however no sign of Sugai has been found.

The search continued Sunday, Monday, and will be resuming this morning (the family is requesting his picture not be released).
