On Thursday, October 30, 2019, at approximately 2:21 pm The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a deceased person just off the USFS 60 Road, near a deserted hunting camp. The reporting party, Glenn Byrd, of Vancouver, WA, reported an Asian male stopped at their hunting camp to report finding a deceased subject in a wooded area near an abandoned hunting camp. The original reporting party then left the scene, while Byrd called 911.

Deputies were dispatched to the area and began searching, an alert was sent to the Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office regarding the vehicle and driver description of the original reporting party, as he was last seen driving toward Trout Lake, WA.  A short time later the Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office located and rerouted the subject that located the body, Sarath Nel, of Portland, OR.

Mr. Nel was escorted back to the USFS 60 Road and directed responding Deputies to the deceased’s’ location, which was 6/10th of a mile down the USFS 6052 Road and 250 yards into the woods. It was there our office located Richard L. Sugai, 78, of Beaverton, Or.

A multi-day search was conducted from Mr. Sugai, after he went missing while mushroom picking, culminating on Sunday, October 27th.  Mr. Sugai was extricated from the forest and later transported to the Clark County Medical Examiner’s office for an autopsy.

Mr. Sugai was located ½ mile, in the opposite direction of his point last seen.
