Skamania County, WA – July 10, 2026 — The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue (SCSOSAR) Team successfully rescued an injured hiker after an evening rescue operation at Snagtooth Falls that extended into the early morning hours.
At approximately 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2026, SCSOSAR was dispatched to assist a 29-year-old male who had suffered a dislocated ankle while hiking with a friend near Snagtooth Falls. Due to the rugged terrain and the nature of the injury, a technical rescue was required.
A total of 14 volunteer Search and Rescue members responded to the incident. Rescuers utilized a wheeled Stokes litter along with a rope rescue system to safely extricate the injured hiker from the challenging terrain. After several hours of coordinated effort, the subject was successfully brought to safety. The mission concluded during the early morning hours of Friday, July 10.
This mission also highlighted the value of emerging technology. Rescue crews were able to take advantage of new T-Mobile satellite connectivity, allowing team members to maintain communications in areas with little or no traditional cellular coverage and difficult radio reception. The enhanced communication capability improved coordination and safety throughout the operation.
The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team is comprised entirely of volunteers who respond at all hours, in all weather conditions, to help those in need throughout Skamania County. The team receives no tax funding for operations and relies solely on community donations to purchase equipment, provide training, and invest in lifesaving technology.
As satellite communication technology continues to prove its value in remote rescue operations, SCSOSAR hopes to expand access by equipping additional team members with T-Mobile satellite service. Community donations will directly support this effort and help improve responder safety and operational effectiveness during future missions.
In addition to financial support, the team is always seeking dedicated community members interested in becoming Search and Rescue volunteers. No prior SAR experience is necessary—training is provided, and volunteers come from all walks of life with a shared commitment to serving their community.
