43 years ago, on May 18th, 1980, Mt. St. Helens erupted, causing an unprecedented event that took 57 lives, making it the deadliest volcanic eruption in United States history. The recent landslide on State Route 504, consisting of debris from the 1980 eruption, is a reminder of the everlasting effects of this event. The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office wants to take a moment to remember those lives lost, as well as the numerous people who were catastrophically affected, by this monumental disaster.
