On 09/04/2024, a bear hunter contacted the Skamania County Communications Center reporting they located what they believed to be a human skull. The reporting party advised the suspected skull was located near the Sawtooth Berry Fields, within the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, in Skamania County. A Skamania County Detective responded to the area, where coordinates were provided, and successfully recovered the skull. The skull was determined to be of human origin. Identity of the remains is unknown and the case is under active investigation at this time. The skull will be sent for forensic analysis in an attempt to make positive identification. There are no indicators to believe there is a public safety risk based on the circumstances of the discovery.
