On 06/04/2024, the Skamania County Communications Center received a report of a lost hiker at the Ape Caves, located within the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. The caller reported his wife and 7-year-old child were separated from him while hiking and had not returned to their vehicle. A Skamania County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Coordinator was assigned to the mission and North County E.M.S. was contacted requesting activation of the Volcano Rescue Team (V.R.T.). While V.R.T. prepared for their response, the Search and Rescue coordinator was able to make phone contact with the lost hiker and obtained her location coordinates. Utilizing these coordinates, the coordinator was able to provide directions to the lost hiker and guide her back to her vehicle, reuniting the family.
