10/24/2024

On 10/23/2024, at approximately 11:18 P.M., the Skamania County Communications Center received a report of an overdue hiker on Wind Mountain, east of Stevenson, Washington. The reporting party advised her father, an 85-year-old Portland man, left around noon that day to hike Wind Mountain. However, the hiker had not returned home and could not be contacted by phone.

A Skamania County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Coordinator was contacted and began allocating resources for volunteer searchers. An on-duty Skamania County Deputy responded to the Wind Mountain Trailhead and located the missing hiker’s vehicle. At approximately 1:21 A.M. on 10/24/2024, volunteers from Skamania County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team located the hiker who was approximately 75 feet off the trail. Based on the rugged terrain, a rope rescue team was requested. Personnel from Skamania County Emergency Medical Services and volunteers from Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue, Skamania County Fire District 1, and Skamania County Fire District 2 were requested for rope rescue and manpower assistance. At approximately 0714, the hiker was brought to the trailhead and transported to the hospital for treatment.

Sheriff Summer Scheyer stated, “This mission is a direct reflection of the phenomenal, collaborative efforts of numerous teams making a difficult, but successful rescue. The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office is, as always, so appreciative of the efforts made by our volunteers and paid professionals who are willing to assist in providing these invaluable services.”
