Skamania County Emergency Management continues to monitor the High Lava Fire burning within the Gifford Pinchot National Forest and remains in coordination with Gifford Pinchot National Forest fire managers, the High Lava Fire Incident Commander, and partner agencies supporting the response.
The fire, which started by lightning on July 23, 2026, is currently estimated at approximately 47 acres. It is burning in steep, rugged, and difficult-to-access terrain approximately 10 miles northwest of Stabler, Washington.
Approximately 100 firefighters, supported by available aerial resources, continue suppression efforts on the High Lava Fire. Fire activity has included occasional isolated tree torching due to hot, dry, and breezy weather conditions. The fire continues to present challenges due to steep terrain, difficult access, dry fuels, and limited resource availability, which restrict direct containment efforts in some areas. Firefighters are utilizing available ground and aerial resources to cool hot spots, strengthen containment lines where conditions allow, and implement contingency plans to prepare for potential changes in fire behavior.
Due to the fire’s location, terrain, access challenges, and current and forecasted weather conditions, suppression efforts and fire-related activities are expected to continue for an extended period and may last beyond several weeks. Fire managers will continue evaluating conditions, adjusting strategies as needed, and working to safely manage the incident. Residents and visitors should be aware that smoke impacts and fire activity may vary based on weather patterns, fire behavior, and suppression operations.
To protect the public and firefighting personnel, the Gifford Pinchot National Forest has implemented road and trail closures in and around the fire area. Visitors are urged to respect all closure signs and avoid entering restricted areas.
